Meet Leslie Helakoski!
Background information: I’ve lived in Michigan for 15 years, and am originally from Louisiana. My husband is a school counselor, basketball coach and former yooper. We have three great kids. I write and illustrate picture books and teach for the Institute of Children’s Literature. My books at this point are: The Smushy Bus, Big Chickens, Big Chickens Fly the Coop, and Woolbur. Coming are Big Chickens Go to Town and Fair Cow.
Prior and current involvement: I’ve been a member of SCBWI for 10 years, served on Adcom for 7 years, and as illustrator coordinator for 5. I’ve co-chaired two fall conferences, organized art schmoozes and museum trips. This year, I am a regional advisor along with my pal, Monica Harris.
What do you love about SCBWI Michigan? I love the feeling of belonging and fitting in that I get with this group. The support we give each other so freely staggers me every time!
