2002 SCBWI-MICHIGAN
MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
MANUSCRIPT COMPETITION INFORMATION
Eligibility. The competition is open to current
SCBWI members residing in Michigan who are unpublished in children's
literature. Because the winner of the competition will participate
in the SCBWI-MI Mentorship Program, entrants must currently live
in Michigan and expect to be living in Michigan from August 31,
2002 through September 1, 2003. SCBWI membership must be maintained
throughout the mentorship program.
"Unpublished" is defined as "never having received
monetary compensation for" and "not self-published"
in children's literature. "Children's literature" is
defined as "books, periodicals, magazines, anthologies or
collections, or electronic media such as CD-ROM, film and videos
where the intended consumers or audience are children."
(Note, if you are a full member of SCBWI for writing, you are
ineligible for this competition.)
Prizes. The grand prize is a one-year writing
mentorship with Audrey Couloumbis, Newbery Honor author of Getting
Near to Baby. The mentorship program includes written critiques
by the mentor on a bimonthly basis. The 1st Runner-Up will receive
a full scholarship to the SCBWI-Michigan Fall Retreat October
4-6, 2002 at Gull Lake and the option of participating in the
"Revisioning Your Novel" workshop. Other runners-up
will receive certificates of recognition.

entry per person. Entry must be a selection of the manuscript-in-progress
of approximately 10 double-spaced, one sided pages, plus a plot
summary of the remaining chapters. (Plot summary may be single-spaced).
Total submission is not to exceed 15 pages. Because this mentorship
program is for novel writing, works such as nonfiction, magazine
articles or stories, easy-readers, and early chapter books are
not eligible for consideration.
A) Manuscript Format.
- Manuscript must follow normal SCBWI submission standards
(typed, double-spaced, etc.) Use 8.5" x 11" white paper
with quality black type, no smaller than 12 pt. Consult "From

DO include a title and page number in the upper right-hand corner
of all subsequent pages. Retain copies of your work. Manuscripts

Your manuscript must be accompanied by the following, which are
not considered part of the 15-page limit:
- A Goal Statement: One or two typed paragraphs

explaining how a mentorship would benefit you. Include your writing
goals and how the mentorship would assist you in reaching these
goals. Also include a statement on how much of this novel-in-progress
is completed or drafted. Do not put your name on this paper.
Make three copies of your goal statement and three copies
of your manuscript. Paper-clip each set with the goal statement
on top. (Please do NOT staple.)
- A Cover Sheet: Submit these three sets with one Cover
Sheet typed on 8.5" x 11" white paper. Include your

be received at the address below no later than April 27, 2002.
You must be registered for the event to have your submission
considered. (You may register for the event prior to submitting
your mentorship competition entry and registration.) Your event
registration must be mailed to the event registrar, Buffy Silverman.
Your mentorship entry form and submission must be mailed to the
Program Coordinator, Lisa Wroble. Please send by regular or priority
mail that does NOT require a signature as the program coordinator
is not home during the day to sign for mail.
You must attend the June 1, "Finding
Your Voice" event in order to receive the mentorship or
the 1st Runner-Up Prize.
Selection Process. Anonymity. In order to insure
an unbiased selection process, it is essential that no identifying
marks or signatures appear on manuscripts, synopsis, or goal
statement. Failure to comply with submission procedures will
result in immediate disqualification.
Judging. The following will be considered in
selecting five finalists and to determine the winning competition
entry: Appropriateness of style and language for the intended
audience and genre; Interpretation and development of the theme
or concept; Development of plot and characters; Potential for
subplot and resolution as described in the chapter summaries.
