The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators is a grassroots organization formed in 1971 by a handful of California writers who shared a love of children's literature, and thought "getting together" might be mutually beneficial.. Now, the Society has over nineteen thousand members, is international in scope, and is the largest writing organization in the world.

The Society functions principally as a network to facilitate the exchange of information between members: writers, illustrators, librarians, educators, editors, agents, publishers, booksellers, and other professionals in the field of children's media.

Various services, educational materials and support are offered in exchange for membership dollars and are dispensed through the main office in California.

At the regional level, the organization is entirely run by volunteers, and remains, very much, grassroots.
